Coach Kelly queries Rams' motivation

Gareth Moore looked to have handed Dewsbury victory, on his 200th career appearance, when his 76th minute drop goal edged them 27-26 ahead only for Rochdale to grab a last-gasp try to seal only their second win of the season.

Kelly believes the team are lacking the self belief to close games out and speaking after the Hornets defeat, he said: “I think some of these players lack the basic motivation that I think a coach should take for granted when preparing a side.

“That basic motivation is that the players are going to do what they need to do to win the game.”

Dewsbury face a tough trip to Barrow for a rearranged game on Sunday, with the Raiders boasting a long unbeaten record in the league.

Barrow stretched that run with their own dramatic win last week when a late converted try saw them snatch a 20-18 victory over Batley Bulldogs.

Kelly is aware of the task facing his side and added: “If we were playing Barrow on at Shaw Cross it would be a tough game when we play like that.

“It has come to the stage where they (the players) have either got to be honest or they have got to go. We have had a chat and people can tell you one thing and do another and I have never wanted to be one of those people but I am worried now that some of my players are those type of people.

“We have got to roll our sleeves up and stop moaning about the referee, stop moaning about how unfortunate we are and its about time we manned up and started doing what we are suppose to do and if we are not going to do that then leave the stage.”

Jamel Goodall made his Rams debut after joining on loan from Bradford Bulls and had an impact from the bench but Kelly knows he needs to work on his match fitness.

Defeat left Dewsbury level on six points with 10th placed Sheffield Eagles and just two ahead of second-bottom Rochdale.

The Rams are also entering another tough period of matches which sees them travel to Halifax and face Batley at the Summer Bash in Blackpool before the end of May followed by games against top four challengers Featherstone Rovers, Toronto Wolfpack and Leigh Centurions.
