Shoppers will be given the power to back their community groups in a new voting project.

Charities and community projects could win £1,000 as part of a store’s new charity scheme.

The Co-operative Food store in Wyke is appealing for groups to put themselves forward for the cash boost, which can be used to fund a one-off event or be put towards the group’s running costs.

Members are encouraged to visit the store, in Towngate, before Friday September 27 to discuss their projects with store manager Dan Pellisier and his team.

Store staff and a member of the Co-operative’s West Yorkshire Area Committee will then chose three finalists from the applicants to be featured at the store from October 3.

Shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite group to win £1,000 until October 31.

Mr Pellisier said: “We are proud to launch this initiative in our store.

“As a community retailer, supporting local charities and community groups is very important to us.

“We already offer support for local groups through our popular Community Fund, but this initiative will really give us a chance to hear about all the great projects and groups that run in the local area, and allow us and our customers to make a real difference to our community.”

The Co-operative will also be donating a further £600 of grants to other community groups in Wyke over the next few months, aided by staff in Wyke and the area committee.
