Angling club members have shown their support for a founding member by raising money for charity in his name.

Thornhill Angling Association founder Peter Boyes has been receiving help from Macmillan Cancer Support nurses.

And to show their gratitude to both Mr Boyes and the charity, his fellow anglers hosted a sponsored fishing match.

Chairman Donald Peirson said: “Peter lives in Holmfirth now but he never missed a meeting.

“He did a tremendous amount of work for the club so he’s very much missed.”

The sponsored fishing match at Eastrington in Beverley was the second hosted by the club in aid of the charity.

Around 20 anglers took part, raising more than £1,280 in the process.

Mr Peirson said: “I’ve been a member for 30 years so I would think the club has been going for about 35.

“We have approximately 180 members but there’s about 20 of us who take part in the match fishing.

“You pay anything up to £20 each. The first three usually take the money, but for this one we got people to sponsor us so all the money has gone to the charity.”

Mr Peirson presented a cheque to Tony Walker, treasurer of the Macmillan’s Dewsbury fundraising committee, last Thursday.

The club meets at the Leggers Inn, Savile Town Wharf, on the first Sunday of each month at 8pm.
