Club committee member Sarah Ellis got involved with the campaign to keep the venue open last year. She said: “I went there with my parents when I was younger. Like a lot of people I grew up in the club.”

Members of the community pulled together to keep it open, with many working for free – and now Mrs Ellis said a welcoming atmosphere and investment was helping the club to thrive.

“I think people thought that we wouldn’t stay open,” she added. “Clubs are closing down two a penny but we are doing really well.”

The club will open on July 6 at 10am for the final British Lions test and there will be a family disco from 5pm.

The venue, which was formally known as Mirfield Liberal Club, is open to non-members – something the committee wants to promote.

“I think people just walk past without realising we are there,” said Mrs Ellis. “We’ve always joked that we are Mirfield’s best kept secret.”
