Dewsbury’s New Picture House is competing against film societies and community cinemas throughout the country in the community, innovation and best new society categories.

Volunteer John Harrison said the team were thrilled to have their efforts recognised.

“The nominations are a great thing for the club as it improves our recognition,” he said.

The cinema was built in unoccupied office space in Yorkshire House in South Street last autumn.

Using velvet seats reclaimed from the old Little Theatre in Batley Carr, they transformed the space into a cinema and cafe area.

Mr Harrison said: “Because Dewsbury once had five cinemas, we decided to try and bring that culture back.

“When we first got the building everything was a complete mess.

“Donations from local businesses and the help of volunteers has definitely paid off.”

Short seasons of six or eight screenings proved so popular that the team began hosting more regular film nights and Saturday matinees aimed at families.

The cinema club, which is a member of the British Federation of Film Societies (BFFS), will find out later this month if it has won.

The volunteers have taken a break over the summer but are planning a new programme of films for autumn.
