The services, from the Church of England’s Book of Common Prayer, will feature some of the finest choral composers and will be sung by the church’s Assumption Consort Choir, directed by Nicholas Whitaker.

Vicar of Staincliffe Fr Anthony Howe said: “We are all very excited by this.

“We want to do something that will not compete with other churches, but that would also offer something beautiful and uplifting to the community.”

The service has remained largely unchanged for more than 450 years, and during that time some of the best English composers have written pieces for it.

“Although the words have stayed the same, the music has changed,” Fr Howe added.

“That really is one of the beauties of Evensong.

“We hear texts that Shakespeare would have known, set to newer music. It is the ultimate ancient-modern experience. And that points to God, who is timeless.”

The next Evensong will be on Sunday October 27 at 6.30pm.
