Chickenley families join community tree project

FAMILIES rolled their sleeves up for a day of gardening when they helped to plant fruit trees for the whole community to enjoy.

Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) teamed up with Chickenley Community Centre to host the Plant It, Grow It, Eat It event.

With the help of local people, they planted 40 dwarf fruit trees at Chickenley Campus in Princess Road, which is home to the community centre, Little Jacks Nursery and Chickenley, Earlsheaton and Shaw Cross Children’s Centre.

The community centre dished out hot drinks and soup for the volunteers, while the KNH community engagement team organised indoor nature activities.

Plant It, Grow It, Eat It is a lottery-funded project set up by KNH to give people in north Kirklees the chance to grow their own fruit and vegetables, to improve health and wellbeing and unite communities.
