Cheers! Britain's gin boom continues - thanks to Yorkshire tipplers

Yorkshire is the second biggest contributor to the UK's rising premium gin sales, selling over bars alone a staggering 64,188 more litres than last year '“ equivalent to 800 bath tubs.

Whilst a quarter of all gin drinking is done in London, gin distribution and consumption is exploding in the county known for its flat-cap wearing and whippet-wielding folk, with cities such as Leeds, Sheffield and York driving its growth.

The news comes as the county gears up to celebrate Yorkshire Day on August 1.

The research by the CGA shows younger people are most likely to pay more for a premium spirit than the older generations. The UK has seen a proliferation of Yorkshire-proud gin makers popping up over the last few years, including Slingsby Gin, inspired by William Slingsby and which is rooted in the restorative powers of the Yorkshire spa town, Harrogate.

Victoria Fletcher, Deputy General Manager at the New Ellington in Leeds, said: “We’ve certainly seen an increase in gin connoisseurs experimenting with our bartenders on variety and taste. We now stock over 300 gins in our gin garden, including Yorkshire favourites Slingsby, Mason’s, and Whittaker’s each with their own garnish.”
