Asthma UK was one of four charities supported by the Reporter Series Fund last year.

And its fundraising team hopes our readers will continue to show their support in the year ahead.

Regional community fundraising officer Emma Moynihan said: “We are asking schools to come together this April – but it can be any time of year if that doesn’t suit – and hold a purple-themed walk to raise money to support children with asthma.

“Whether they make their walk long or short, we’ll help them plan the day and provide all the materials they’ll need to make it memorable.”

The Reporter Series chose to support the charity following the deaths of two local schoolchildren in 2012.

Batley teenager Jess Charlton died after having an asthma attack at her father’s home.

And Hannan Ahmed, who lived in Staincliffe, died on his second day at his new school.

More than 1,300 pupils at Bruntcliffe School in Morley took part in a sponsored walk in May in memory of Jess.

Now the charity hopes other schools will do the same.

Ms Moynihan said: “By taking part in the Big Purple Walk, they’ll be helping us to keep children with asthma safe – both at home and at school.”
