Celebration marks Louisa’s 101st birthday

Louisa Hemingway, who lives at Croft House Care Home in Gawthorpe, was born on February 4, 1913, when King George V was on the throne, and was one of 10 children who grew up on Boothroyd Lane in Dewsbury.

She worked as a sorter at Burrows Mill in the town, where she met George Hemingway, a wagon driver at the mill, who she married in 1937. Mr Hemingway died 20 years ago aged 80.

Mrs Hemingway, who has lived at the home in High Street for five years, had a daughter, Barbara Hinchliffe, 76, grandchildren Jayne Wood, 51, and Stephen Hinchliffe, 49, and great grandchildren Gregory Hinchliffe, 21, and Robert Wood, 22.

Barbara Hinchliffe, of Thornhill, said: “She had seven sisters and three brothers and the sisters were really close.

“She was always laughing, and always liked to be a bit silly. She worked all her life and thought her grandchildren were marvellous. And she thought her great grand children were absolutely brilliant because both went to university.”
