Cash raised to feed refugees

Volunteers raised £2,000 for refugees after a sponsored 17.5 mile walk.

Around 15-20 members of the Al-Khair Foundation paced from Lightwaves Leisure Centre on Lower York Street in Wakefield through Dewsbury and finished in Huddersfield on Monday.

Cash donated towards the three miles per hour walk will be given to refugees staying at a camp on the border between Greece and Macedonia border, which feeds 10,000 people daily.

Organiser Alam Ghafoor said: “It was very, very well received. We had a great response and we were fortunate that the weather was good.”

The amble was part of a bigger event, the Grand Walk, which started in Glasgow on the May 26 and finishes in London on the June 4.

After setting off at 10am, the walkers did not arrive in Huddersfield until around 5.30pm.

Some volunteers joined in with the hike for just a few miles, and the children taking part were driven the distances where walking could have become unsafe for them. Donations poured in as the foundation conducted a live feed of its efforts online and it was broadcast on Iqra TV.
