Kirklees Council was finally handed the keys to Woodland Court on School Lane in Dewsbury, by Wates Living Space last week.

It is the first of three extra care developments within the Excellent Homes for Life project to be completed, providing 46 homes for people who want to live independently, but require additional care and support.

The development will officially open in July, and last week, the council awarded Radis Community Care, which is looking to fill around 25 posts, the care contract.

Excellent Homes for Life is a partnership between the council and Regenter Excellent Homes for Life, a consortium of companies including Wates Living Space and John Laing. Pinnacle PSG will manage and maintain the new homes over the next 20 years on behalf of the council.

A second extra care site will open in Heckmondwike later in the year and by the end of 2014, 466 one and two bedroom homes will have been built by the project.

Coun Molly Walton, Kirklees Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, said: “We’re delighted Woodland Court is opening soon. We’re looking forward to working closely with Radis. The support they provide will help people to live the life they choose in their own home independently, whether this is in an emergency or on a day to day level.’
