Carlton Junior and Infant School moved to its current Batley Carr site in 1985, but it was not the first school to have made its home there.

The building in Upper Road was also used as school when it opened in 1912.

Learning mentor Pam Motley said: “It was opened on August 19 by the former Mayoress H B Walker as a council school, and later it was an immigration centre.”

Current pupils are celebrating the site’s history in what would have been the original school’s 100th year.

Next Thursday they will join staff and members of the Parent and Teachers’ Assocation to host an Edwardian Fair.

Mrs Motley said: “We’re going to be getting dressed up in clothes of the era.”

Attractions will include old-fashioned sweet and candy floss stalls, a coconut shy, kite making and hopscotch.

The fair is open to the public, 1.30pm-4pm.
