Can you help to run Mirfield Show?

Community-minded residents who want to help plan Mirfield Show have been invited to join the event's organising committee.

Preparations are well underway for the 2016 show, due to take place on August 21, and volunteers are currently working on improvements to the Showground’s land to create a ‘squelch-free’ venue.

Each year the event, which began in 1945, features agricultural competitions, animal displays, and food, drink and craft stalls. A craft marquee showcases art and hand-made goods from across Yorkshire. Local people are also encouraged to enter a range of produce and craft classes.

The show committee are gathering for their Annual General Meeting on Monday February 8 at 7.30pm in the Old Colonial on Dunbottle Lane. Members of the public, including potential volunteers, are welcome to attend.

“We are not a boring or stuffy committee and we promise it will be less daunting than you imagine. The team brings together people of all ages and from all walks of life. We’re always on the lookout for passionate individuals who want to join in the fun,” said committee chair Karen Bullivant, who is hoping to attract more than 12,000 visitors to this year’s event.

Mirfield Show does not make a profit and is funded from sponsorship from companies, organisations and individuals.

Revenue generated from previous shows has been ploughed back into improving the Huddersfield Road site ahead of the 2016 event.

“Parts of the field are in a poor condition and significant areas are unusable after heavy rain. This work will improve the general condition and make event planning easier. The field is owned by Kirklees MC and they have welcomed our efforts to improve the field. We are aiming for a squelch-free 2016 show,” said organiser Jake Hinchliffe.

Mirfield Show has remained affordable since it was revived in 1995, and adults tickets are available for £3.50 in advance and £5 on the gate. Children under 16 are admitted free of charge.

The show committee are currently accepting applications from potential sponsors and stall holders. Visit www.mirfieldshow.com for details or email [email protected].
