Call for waterways squaddies

RESIDENTS have been asked to help improve Dewsbury’s waterways as part of a new project.

The Dewsbury Water Linked project will see improvements made to the Calder and Hebble Navigation and the River Calder, under the guidance of British Waterways.

Last year the project was awarded £174,000 by the Big Lottery Fund and now it wants to recruit up to six people to form a Wildlife Action Squad.

They will help to improve the habitats of wildlife living along the waterways such as bats, voles and otters.

Members of the squad will also tend to plots of land along the canal side.

At first they will work under the supervision of a project officer, but over time the volunteers will be given more independence and responsibility.

For anyone interested, there will be a Wildlife Action Squad taster day at Savile Town Wharf in Mill Street East on Saturday February 18.
