Call for rugby teams to get involved

A celebration of all things rugby league is coming to North Kirklees this month.

Heavy Woollen District’s first ever Rugby League Day is taking place ahead of the Festival of World Cups coming to our area.

It will also commemorate 40 years since Dewsbury Rugby League Club’s Championship victory in 1973.

A series of events, including a re-enactment of the historic game by mascots, will be held around Dewsbury town centre on June 29.

And organisers are calling on all amateur rugby league teams in the region to get involved. John Dennehy said: “There will be people in their sixties and seventies who remember the game, but we want them to bring their children and grandchildren along to celebrate.”

The 1973 cup will also be awarded to ex-captain Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson and other members of the squad in a mock ceremony. Festival of World Cups fixtures will take place at the Rams’ and Bulldogs’ stadiums in the weeks following the event.
