BUSINESSES vented their anger this week over the management of Dewsbury’s free parking scheme.

A delay by Kirklees Council to approve the Cliffe Street scheme for another year has left many traders without any free parking vouchers to hand out to loyal customers.

Dewsbury Chamber of Trader and Dewsbury Retail Forum heard there had been complaints from market traders, shops and customers.

Chamber president Trish Makepeace said: “Members of the public are getting quite uppity and saying if they don’t get their free parking, they won’t come into Dewsbury. It’s quite a worry for traders - the market and the shops.

“When people do come to ask for vouchers, they think it’s us withholding them.”

Assistant town centre manager Viv Edmonds said the last batch of vouchers expired on March 31 but would be accepted by parking attendants until the end of the month in light of the delay.

Mrs Makepeace said: “Most people haven’t got any left to give out.”

But Mrs Edmonds said the town centre team was delivering vouchers from the old batch to those who had run out and would distribute the new vouchers as soon as they arrived.
