Brush up on history at town's arts festival

A three-day celebration and appreciation of the arts will take place next week.

Organisers of this year’s Mirfield Arts Festival are counting down the days until Friday, when the event kicks off.

It takes place until Sunday and will feature original art exhibitions, talks and walks across the town.

Mirfield Library will act as a hub during the festival, where visitors can get their hands on festival brochures, guides, drinks, vouchers and entertainment.

Throughout the festival, talks will take place about the Mirfield Malting industry and the railways and their links to the town.

The work of Charlotte Bronte will also be celebrated and there will be a special Bronte Walk which will take visitors on a tour of the town.

There will be entertainment from the Nightingales Ladies Choir, as well as giant outdoor children’s games and a pop-up sculpture park.

Book readings and poetry sessions will take place at the festival.

Poetry group A Firm of Poets will entertain visitors on Saturday evening.

Leeds United fans will get a chance to learn about their heroes and see rare club memorabilia during the festival.

And a drumming display, carnival and the brass band is also on offer on Saturday.

The festival this year is sponsored and funded by Arts Council England.
