Brocklesby murder trial latest

Richard Oldroyd, 20, of Great Pond Street, Ravensthorpe, took the stand at Leeds Crown Court today (Friday).

He is accused of murdering Mr Brocklesby after a house party in Brooklyn Road, Cleckheaton, on May 7.

The row spilled out into the street and a fight started between two groups.

Oldroyd admits stabbing Mr Brocklesby twice, in the back and in the side - but says he did it to protect his friend Josiah Mayman.

He said that Mr Brocklesby was punching Mr Mayman and he feared for his friend’s safety. Oldroyd admitted stabbing My Brocklesby once, and when that failed to stop the attack he stabbed him again.

Oldroyd said he was carrying a 16mm knife with a black handle and silver blade to protect himself after an unconnected row with another man on Facebook. He said he was in shock when he realised he had killed Mr Brocklesby.

“I felt like crying and my head was all over the place,” he said.

He has admitted killing Mr Brocklesby but denies murder.
