Breaking news: Fire station merger gets go-ahead

BATLEY and Dewsbury fire stations will be merged, it was decided today.

The merger is part of a county-wide cost-cutting plan.

Dewsbury and Batley will lose 24 full-time firefighter posts, all through planned retirements.

The new fire station is likely to be based in the Batley Carr area and may take up to four years to build.

Coun David Ridgway, who chairs the fire authority, said his colleagues had approved the plans ‘with a heavy heart’.
