BREAKING NEWS: Campaigners lose development fight

CAMPAIGNERS last night lost their fight to protect land in Chidswell, south Dewsbury and Cooper Bridge from development.

In a mammoth 13-hour meeting, Kirklees Council voted through its controversial Local Development Framework (LDF) plan with only minor changes.

At Cooper Bridge, 42 hectares of land will be set aside for industrial development.

At Chidswell, 500 homes will be built on the green belt and 35 hectares of land will be used for industry.

And at south Dewsbury, a plan to build 1,500 homes on the green belt was reduced to 1,000.

Cleckheaton will see 10 hectares of land given over for businesses, a reduction of six hectares from the original proposals.

And at Birstall, 15 hectares of land will be used for industry, a reduction of just one hectare from the original plan.
