Boxing clever at classes for kids

Young people have been getting boxing clever at new weekly sports sessions funded by a community grants scheme.

Boxing classes have been taking place at Westmoor Community Sports Hall and will be running for the next three weeks on a temporary trial basis.

The hope is that they will generate enough interest to allow a boxing club to be set up in Dewsbury Moor in the Autumn. So far, around 30 people have been going each week.

Founder Shane Hussain said: “It’s good for kids’ confidence and self esteem and it teaches them new skills.

“One of the main things is the diversity of the people who come – girls and boys, young and old, ethnic minorities.”

The project has been funded through lottery programme Sportivate and the Dewsbury Moor Big Local Partnership’s Quick Wins scheme, which releases lottery money for local community projects.

Mr Hussain is a member of the Big Local Partnership and runs the SET3 sports-based social enterprise, which is currently looking for volunteers.

He said: “The kids at the boxing classes get access to other boxing facilities and they get all the information about the activities that SET3 do.”

Currently, Mr Hussain is looking at the possibility of getting a portable boxing ring for Westmoor, in Church Lane, or finding a venue that could fit a ring in permanently. If you can help, call 07519 660049 or email shane@set3.org.uk.
