Book shines a spotlight on old pubs in Thornhill Lees

THE old pubs of a Dewsbury village are in the spotlight for a new book.

Memories, photos and stories about erstwhile watering holes of Thornhill Lees are needed by a group working on bringing the past to life.

Did you drink in the locals of Thornhill Lees? Remember pubs as the gathering places for workers at firms such as Wormalds and Walker’s, the Yorkshire Transformer Company or Austin’s steelworks? Do you have pictures or memories of those pubs as they once were? If so, the group wants to hear from you.

The book being prepared is based on a successful exhibition on Thornhill Lees. People living in or having links with the area created the exhibition Transforming Thornhill Lees which was hosted by the community centre before going on to Ravenshall School and Dewsbury Museum.

It featured the many industries which made the village thrive as well as personal memories linked to them.

The Transforming Thornhill Lees Editing Group is now working with Kirklees Council and local writer Gareth Durasow to produce a publication and CD about the village’s industrial history. And the group is keen to collect stories and images of the area’s pubs, which often gave workers somewhere to socialise and relax. Many are now closed or have disappeared.
