Book giveaway marks new chapter for learning in Chickenley

CHILDREN in Chickenley are getting a head start when it comes to reading thanks to a book giveaway.

The Chickenley Aspirations committee has bought 500 books with the aim of giving a free book to every pre-school child in the area.

Committee chairman Coun Paul Kane (Lab, Dews East) said: “We’ve got low attainment rates at senior schools locally. This is about getting children into education as quickly as we possibly can.

“We also want mums and dads to get involved in their children’s education. There may be stumbling blocks in that the parents have reading or writing issues and we want to help them too if that’s the case.”

The book giveaway was supported by Kirklees Council’s Narrowing the Gap fund. Previous projects have included the distribution of crime prevention equipment and repairs to estates.

Books are still available from the children’s centre in Princess Road.
