Bomb squad call to Ravensthorpe was false alarm

POLICE have said a bomb scare in Ravensthorpe was a false alarm.

Police received calls at 3.09pm about a potentially suspicious package in Northstead.

They closed North Road and evacuated the area, while the bomb squad investigated.

A police spokeswoman has now said it was a false alarm.

She said the call was made with good intent and the bomb squad would be leaving shortly.

Arriva has been diverting 202 Leeds to Huddersfield buses along Church Lane.

Angela Asquith, who lives in Huddersfield Road, said she saw dozens of emergency service vehicles heading along North Road.

She said: “Police came tearing up from Dewsbury on both sides of the road. They went straight through the red lights on the North Road.

“A big truck that said Royal Logistics Corp on the side went by and on the back it said bomb disposal.”

Witnesses are reporting on Twitter and Facebook that the army is also there.

It is the second time today that the bomb squad has been called to Dewsbury.

Police went to Foxroyd Lane in Thornhill at 11am after a mortar shell was found.

The bomb squad checked the shell and found it was not live.

It is thought the shell was discovered by a boy playing in a garden.
