Body found during police canal search in Mirfield

THE body of an elderly man has been found in a Mirfield canal.

Police started searching the Calder and Hebble Navigation this morning after a member of the public found personal property, including a coat, on the side of the canal at around 10.10am.

Teams from West Yorkshire were joined by a South Yorkshire Police helicopter as they searched the canal and surrounding area throughout the day.

This afternoon, police divers found the body of an elderly man in the water.

The man has not been formally identified yet and a post mortem examination is due to take place.

A police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
