Birkdale’s last ever GCSE exam pupils

BirKDALE High School’s last ever GCSE students have collected their exam results.

But the school is celebrating because 80 per cent of its students got five A*-C grades.

Headteacher Chris Caraher said: “Obviously there is some sadness, but for me it’s about seeing the faces of these students now that we have given them the best possible start so that they can move on to some fantastic futures.

“That’s why we are here – it’s for the kids.”

The school’s last head girl Louise Walker was celebrating getting the grades she needed to take her A-levels at Heckmondwike Grammar School.

She said: “It’s special being one of the last pupils, but the fact that we are the last isn’t right. It feels sad but it’s good to be back.”

All other Birkdale pupils will return to start lessons in September as students of Westborough High School.
