Bin collections to be changed?

Cabinet members will be asked to approve changes to collection days for different types of waste in some areas to allow teams to work more closely together and for fewer vehicles to be used.

Proposals include a move to a 38-hour, four day bin collection service from Monday to Thursday.

The council believe £496,000 will be saved annually and have said there are no planned redundancies because the cutting of 10 roles will be those occupied by temporary staff.

Cathy Scott (Lab, Dewsbury East), Cabinet member for Housing and the Relief of Poverty, said that the changes need to be made to achieve the twin goals of improving service overall and meeting financial targets.

“We have looked at best practice elsewhere and worked with industry bodies like WRAP and APSE to develop the new delivery model.

“In the past we have resisted changing bin days for residents in order to provide a top quality service with continuity, but this has come at the cost of efficiency, as over time new estates and properties are added to rounds that unbalance them.

“We are now at a point where we need to deliver the most efficient service.”

Cabinet members meet on Tuesday July 28 to discuss the proposals.
