Behind the headlines with Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Simon Reevell

Getting out and about nearer home I spent an enjoyable evening at Christ the King Church in Mirfield where we had an interesting question and answer session and it was a great pleasure to visit Overthorpe Sports Club to see first hand all the effort that has been put in to make it such a thriving club.

It was also a pleasure to visit the Greenwood Centre in Ravensthorpe to see the results of this summer’s archaeological excavation that brought together children from local schools to excavate and to get to know one another. They actually discovered an air raid shelter that was not shown on any local maps.

September’s Saturday street stalls in Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton were all very busy with issues ranging from wind turbines to housing developments and I also held a busy Friday surgery in Mirfield.

Do remember that if you have a problem and you cannot get out to the Friday surgeries (Dewsbury, Mirfield, Skelmanthorpe and Shelley), the Saturday ‘street stalls’ (Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton) or the Monday ‘mobile office’ (Savile Town, Ravensthorpe, Denby Dale or Shepley) I can come and visit you at home.

Another of September’s projects was the submission of the Town Team’s application for government funding as part of the Mary Portas Review. Proposals that are supported by MPs are eligible for £10,000 from the government.

Our application is based around two ideas. The first is aimed at people who use the town centre but the idea is to try and bring those people into the town centre at different times through things like evening events. The second involves staging events to attract people who would not normally come into the town at all. I think we made a strong bid so fingers crossed.

Another of September’s events was an invite from the Prime Minister to go to his flat (which is actually above number 11 Downing Street) for a drink.

It was a pleasant evening and we discussed this constituency and some of the issues that we are facing. He listened and took on board what I had to say. I managed to leave Downing Street without incident!
