Behind the headlines with Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Simon Reevell

Over the last week I have been going through all of the entries for the Emley award.

This is the award that will be presented at the top of Emley Mast (thank you Arqiva) to the person judged to have put the most into his or her local community within my constituency.
There will three highly commended finalists. But what struck all of us on the judging panel was the huge number of people who give so much time and effort for an enormous range of activities right across our part of the West Riding.

Sports clubs, community magazines, charity fundraising and just being there for other less fortunate people; this area is full of those who just quietly get on with it. People so modest that they would never think to nominate themselves but who are all so deserving of our recognition and appreciation.

I would just like to say thank you to all our unsung heroes, and thank you to all those who wrote in nominating those worthy people. The result will be announced but there really were only winners.

There are of course other forms of public service – ask the litter pickers who will be out tomorrow in Holroyd Park (see you about 11am) and, of course, the sort that comes with a uniform. Tomorrow is Armed Forces Day and as part of the events I will present Veteran’s Badges to a number of people who have not received theirs for a variety of reasons.

Tim Wood at Mirfield’s Old Colonial asked if I could intervene with the MOD to get the badges and the ceremony will take place there just after midday. Do come along and join me in showing our gratitude.

After the ceremony there is a rather different event in Savile Town – a football match between Imams and priests. I am refereeing one half (it’s 10 minutes each way so I should make it!) and it should be a great event.

Assuming that the priests are looking to play the long high ball to Tom from the Minster it could be a high scoring match!

Well-done Kumon Y’all for organising everything.
