Batley man jailed for selling crack near Dewsbury pub

Leeds Crown Court heard on Wednesday how Adam Baig, 25, began delivering the drugs for a dealer in a bid to pay off his own debt.

He turned up on seven occasions between November 1 last year and January 31 this year when the undercover officers placed an order to a “ring and bring” line.

Prosecutor John Bull said he was given the tag name Bath until later identified because the officers had been directed to wait near the Bath Hotel in Dewsbury on the first four occasions he turned up.

Shufqat Khan, representing Baig, said he had been leading a normal life until summer last year, working although he admitted dabbling in cannabis.

But after his parents had difficulties and separated he was unable to cope and resorted to using drugs to escape from his problems, quickly using up his savings.

He then found himself in debt and was told he could pay it off by making deliveries.

Mr Khan said Baig “realised the error of his ways” and stopped what he was doing.

With the help of family he also stopped taking drugs himself and paid off the debt.

Baig, of Brown’s Place, admitted seven charges of supplying class A drugs.

Judge Guy Kearl QC said he had read references showing Baig as a kind and responsible family member and had taken into account his personal circumstances, but there had to be an immediate sentence.
