A letter to parents was sent out on Monday along with a consultation document asking for their views on not recruiting any more pupils for Years 12 and 13.

Closing in September 2016 would allow for all current sixth form pupils, currently numbering 47, to finish their studies.

The school said the sixth form was no longer viable.

The letter stated: “The governing body at Batley Grammar School, following much discussion and, with considerable regret, has decided to consult on the proposal not to recruit new sixth form students from September 2015.”

Headteacher Brigid Tullie said: “The strength of Batley Grammar School over many, many years is down to the fact that it has managed to adapt and develop successfully according to external factors and circumstances.

“I see this as another stage in that development.”

She added that the move would allow the school to offer more Year 7 places, which are heavily oversubscribed.
