Batley Bulldogs in the pink for charity

Batley Bulldogs changed from their official colours of cerise and fawn to a new look pink kit for their grudge match with Dewsbury Rams on Sunday.

Fans from both teams donned bright pink T-shirts at the game to highlight the plight of the many women who are affected by breast cancer.

More than £7,000 was raised and Beverley Nicholas, chairman Kevin Nicholas’ wife, said the club were overwhelmed by the response from supporters.

“It was a wonderful weekend,” she said.

“For something which started off just as an idea for the players to wear pink to raising all this money, we cannot thank everyone enough for their support.”

The fundraising weekend kicked off with 10k sponsored walk from the Mount Pleasant club to the Tetley’s Stadium and back.

Around 80 walkers were led by the club’s directors and club officials, who wore bright pink T-shirts and tutus.

Mrs Nicholas said: “We were on Leeds Road and a man just pulled up beside us in his car and asked if we were raising money for breast cancer.

“Then he took out £50 and gave it to us. I could not believe how generous he was.

“It goes to show how people feel about raising money for the cause.”

After the walkers returned to the club, fans watched an Under-14s girls tournament, who competed for a pink trophy, and a pig racing event.
