Asthma attack death was ‘tragic’

A THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD boy died after having an acute asthma attack on his second day at a new school.

Hannan Ahmed, of Hawthorne Avenue, Staincliffe, was playing football at Mirfield Free Grammar School when the attack began, a court heard.

During an inquest at Bradford Coroner’s Court on Tuesday, Coroner Dr Peter Henry Straker described Hannan’s death as ‘utterly tragic’.

The court heard that Hannan ran up to his PE teacher saying “I can’t breathe” on September 5 last year.

He had an inhaler but the attack got worse so staff called an ambulance.

Teachers placed him in the recovery position and began CPR before paramedics arrived.

Hannan was taken to Dewsbury and District Hospital and died there in the early hours of the following morning.

His GP Dr Javed Khan told the court that Hannan had been diagnosed with asthma at the age of three and used blue and brown inhalers to manage the condition.

He said Hannan had had an acute exacerbation of his asthma in Feburary last year but had recovered well.

Coroner Straker returned a verdict of natural causes.

Hanan’s family were not present at the hearing.

After his death in September, his mother Anjum told the Reporter: “Heaven has received a diamond.”
