Arrests after EDL protest

A DEMONSTRATION by the English Defence League (EDL) in Cleckheaton led to two arrests for criminal damage in Dewsbury.

The protest on Saturday afternoon on Savoy Square, opposite the town hall, in Bradford Road, passed peacefully, with the 60 supporters leaving the scene by 3pm – more than two hours after the planned event.

However, later in the afternoon police responded to reports of disorder in Dewsbury town centre, leading to two arrests of EDL followers who had travelled to the nearby town.

A police spokesman added: “Two arrests were made for criminal damage. High visibility patrols and community consultation were undertaken with no increase in tension being reported.”
