The teenagers learned about the need to commemorate those who had fought in the world wars by observing a minute's silence in their memory. All 880 pupils took part and they also watched a thought-provoking presentation about Armistice Day traditions.

The head boy and girl then laid poppies in the school's Peace Garden and reflected on the poignancy of the occasion.

In the run-up to the day, students learned about World War One in class and volunteers sold poppies around the school on behalf of the Royal British Legion.

“It is a privilege to lead the silence with students who are so keen to pay their respects. Students understand that people from all over the world lost their lives defending their freedoms in World War One, and that this continues today. One hundred and one years since the start of the conflict it is vital that we pass the message of remembrance onto the next generation,” said head of humanities Mrs Hattersley.
