Archbishop of York in town

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, spoke at the Markazi Jamia Masjid Anwar-e-Madina mosque in Crawshaw Street, Ravensthorpe.

He told gatherers that labels like ‘Muslim’ and ‘Christian’ can distract from the problems that all people share.

He said: “If you are homeless, you are homeless. If your family is in need, your family is in need. We need to rise above the labels we give people.”

Earlier, the Archbishop dedicated a new cross at Dewsbury Minster. The mosque event highlighted the work of Kirklees Faiths Forum in building relationships between faiths.

Other speakers included Mawlana Asim from the mosque, Bishop of Pontefract Tony Robinson, Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan and council chief executive Adrian Lythgo.

Fakhara Rehman, from Kirklees Faiths Forum, said: “The Archbishop’s visit demonstrated the importance he puts to good relations between all people.”
