Apprentices trade places for a day

Some of Kirklees Council’s apprentices have spent a day in someone else’s shoes to get a better idea of the different kinds of jobs available.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, the council arranged a day during which admin workers could get to learn a bit about retail and vice versa.

Cabinet member Coun Peter McBride said: “Whilst many apprentices go on to permanent employment within their current workplace it is also important that they get to see what other opportunities exist so that they can make informed decisions about their future options.

“Apprentices not only learn how to do a specific job but also gain transferable life and professional skills which make them excellent employees for any type or size of business.”

The programme began when Karim Sheta swapped his role in the reactive maintenance team at Honley with Thomas Langford, who works at Alice’s Hardware in Huddersfield’s Queensgate Centre.
