An Egg-cellent idea for charity appeal

But do you really need to buy all those Easter eggs, or can you afford to spare just one in the name of charity?

That’s what is being asked by the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Andrew Palfreeman.

To date, the Mayor’s charity appeal has raised £30,000 for veteran’s charity Combat Stress, which aims to provide clinical care and support to soldiers left with psychological injuries after serving in war zones, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

The charity, which has been running since the end of World War I in 1919, is currently running the Enemy Within appeal – a challenge to raise £30m to establish 14 community outreach teams, including one in Yorkshire.

On hearing of its cause, Coun Palfreeman said there was no doubt in his mind that this was the charity for his civic appeal.

With just seven weeks to the end of his mayoral year, Coun Palfreeman is hoping as many people as possible donate to the cause.

He said: “If everyone in Kirklees gave just one pound we’d be going on for half a million pounds! That being said, you can’t get much for a pound these days.

“If everybody buys one Easter egg less this year and instead donates the money, they would have spent through the Mayor’s charity appeal to Combat Stress we could make a substantial amount of money for a very worthy cause.”
