Kirklees Council has teamed up with British Cycling and West Yorkshire Metro to promote all things two-wheeled.

The area is already popular with many cyclists thanks to car-free routes like the Spen Valley Greenway.

But the new partnership – announed as part of National Bike Week celebrations – hopes to encourage many more people, particularly women, to get involved.

Coun Jean Calvert, Kirklees Cabinet member for health, wellbeing and communities, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity to get more people out and about on bikes and enjoying the many health benefits that cycling can bring.

“Cycling is a fun, sociable activity but most importantly for those who cycle regularly it is a great way to get fitter and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“We are particularly keen to encourage women and those who currently do little or no activity to try cycling as an enjoyable way to become more active.”

The Sky Ride Local programme will offer a series of free, fun, guided bike rides around Kirklees between July and the end of September.

The rides, led by British Cycling Ride Leaders, follow scenic routes for cyclists of different abilities.

British Cycling’s Breeze network, a scheme aimed at women, is also coming to our district.

Meanwhile, Social Cycling Groups will be run all year round by local cyclists.

Pip Mourne, a ride leader from Almondbury, said: “I am so pleased that Sky Ride Local is coming to Kirklees this summer. I have been working with route planners to map some great routes.

“We have a great group of ride leaders who are really looking forward to leading some fantastic rides. The rides can’t start soon enough now, we are all keen, eager and ready to ride!”
