35 people charged after major Kirklees drugs operation

Thirty five people been charged with more than 200 drugs supply offences following a major police operation in Kirklees.

Among them are nine men from Batley, three from Batley Carr and one from Liversedge.

Det InspPhil Little said: “Operation Overwood was a series of days of co-ordinated activity responding to community concerns about street level drug dealing in Kirklees.

“During the operation we seized approximately £10,000 in cash and quantities of cocaine and cannabis, including plants from a substantial cannabis farm, which was discovered as part of the activity.

“We will not tolerate the use and supply of illegal drugs in our communities and hope that members of the public are reassured by the decisive action we have taken to address this issue in Kirklees.”

Two men from Batley and one man from Batley Carr are due to appear at Kirklees Magistrates Court today (Tuesday).

Naeem Ashraf, 37, of Manor Row, is charged with 15 counts of a supplying a class A drug.

Kessar Naveed, 18, of Hawthorn Avenue, and Adil Qayyum, 20, Pickles Street, are charged with one and two counts of the same offence.

Three others have pleaded guilty and have been sentenced.

Umar Ditta, 27, of Conway Crescent, Batley, received a two year prison sentence suspended for two years and 200 hours unpaid work for two counts of supplying a class A drug.

Iulian Velicu, 36, of Eyre Street, Batley, was jailed for 16 months for five counts of supplying a class B drug, one of producing a class B drug and one count of possessing a class B drug with intent to supply.

Meanwhile, five people have pleaded guilty and will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court.

Adam Baig, 25, of Browns Place, Batley, admitted seven counts of supplying a class A drug and is due to be sentenced on June 30.

Zubair Ali, 28, of Whitaker Street, Batley, admitted six counts of supplying a class A drug and is due to be sentenced on July 14.

Suleman Navsarka, 25, of Mill Road Road, Batley Carr, admitted one count of a supplying a class A drug and is due to be setenced on June 30.

Arshid Safdar, 33, of Lady Ann Road, Batley, admitted five counts of supplying a class B drug and is due to be sentenced on July 18.

Darion Dawson, 22, of Upper Barker Street, Liversedge, pleaded guilty to four counts of supplying a class B drug and is due to be sentenced on July 1.

Three more people have not entered a plea yet but will appear at Leeds Crown Court next month.

Mohammed Rhafan Javed, 26, of Dark Lane, Batley, was charged with three counts of supplying a class A drug and will appear in court on July 7.

Bilal Qayum, 19, of Pickles Street, Batley Carr, was charged with four counts of supplying a class A drug and will appear in court on July 2.

Jamal Malik, 19, of Taylor Street, Mount Pleasant, Batley, was charged with three counts of supplying a class A drug and will appear in court on July 7.
