Maurice Wood, who lived in Ravensthorpe all his life, served with the army during the World War II, fighting at the Battle of Kohima.

A much-loved local character, he took a keen interest in sport and education right up until the end of his life.

After leaving school at 15, Mr Wood joined the Yorkshire Electric Board as a draughtsman. Mr Wood was called up to the army in 1939, and served in the 16th Field Regiment with the Royal Artillery until 1945.

After the war he returned to the electric board until his retirement in 1979.

Mr Wood took a keen interest in the local community, and sang in the Ravensthorpe Parish Church St Saviour’s Choir for more than 60 years.

He was also a scout master and a governor at Ravensthorpe Middle School.

A lifelong Huddersfield Town fan, Mr Wood was also a member of Yorkshire Cricket Club.

Last year he visited Buckingham Palace as part of a group of 20 veterans of the Battle of Kohima. Mr Wood said at the time: “I was shocked when I got the invite. I didn’t expect that.”

Despite his achievements, he was a humble man who valued those close to him.

“He was a very popular and well-loved man,” said his niece Janet Griffiths. “He was such a kind person and everyone has good memories of him. He never liked to boast of his achievements.”

“He will be missed by us all.

Maurice passed away on Friday May 17. His funeral will take place on Thursday May 30, 1pm, at Mirfield Parish Church.
