When the Reporter Series relaunched earlier this year, with a new look and extra value sections including a new puzzles page and junior sport pages, promotions were carried out in supermarkets across the district.

And as a thank you for the support at Sainsbury’s, the company gave money to their charity fund. Sainsbury’s in Dewsbury recently chose the B. Baggins Foundation for Limb Girdle and Muscular Dystrophy charity, based in Spen, as one of its chosen charities this year.

Staff at Sainsbury’s have a colleague council who invite staff members, and shoppers, to nominate charities to support. A shortlist is drawn up and the charities are invited in to pitch, Dragons Den-style, to the council to say why they should be chosen.

Sainsbury’s manager Tammy Sanders, said B. Baggins, which was started by a family and became a national charity, will be supported for a year by the supermarket.

The cash, which totalled £365.45, was handed over to the charity at Sainsbury’s. Tammy said: “The colleague council wanted it to be a local charity where we could make a real difference.

“This is the only charity in the country doing this and they are trying to support people right across the country.”
