Water destination!

They were built by the Manchester Ship Canal Company and were opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria.

Once the third busiest port in Britain, the docks declined during the 1970s, finally closing in 1982 with the loss of 3,000 jobs.

In 1983 Salford City Council acquired parts of the docks, which were rebranded as Salford Quays.

Redevelopment began in 1985, when dams were built to isolate the docks and improve water quality.

Two years later 12,000 coarse fish, were introduced, which have since thrived.

Between 1986 and 1990 an internal waterway network was created; roads and bridges were built and a promenade along the waterfront constructed and landscaped.

Moorings and watersports facilities were provided and a railway swing bridge relocated.

A hotel, cinema, housing and offices were built with public and private investment totalling £280 million by the early 1990s

In 2007, construction of MediaCityUK began.

Now, CBBC, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Research and BBC Sport are housed there, as is ITV Granada.

The Quays is also a residential area, with at least nine house and apartment developments.
