Cancelling the 2021 Mirfield Agricultural Show 'is the right decision', say organisers

Mirfield Agricultural Show has been cancelled for the second year running, as organisers feel it would be "irresponsible to try to continue with the event and put people at risk".

Following an online meeting of the steering committee on Tuesday night, members took the decision to cancel the popular show - but they will take the event "virtual" again for 2021.

Jonathan Evans, chairman of the Mirfield Agricultural Show Committee, said: "Although we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we continue to find ourselves in difficult times as we fight the battle of this terrible pandemic.

"There are far too many uncertainties out there at the moment and for the well-being of all our committee, our volunteers, our sponsors, those who we invite to take part in the show and for the wider Community of Mirfield, then this was definitely the right decision to make.

"It would be irresponsible of us to try to continue with the show this year, putting people at risk.

"Moving forward we will now take Mirfield Show virtual again for 2021 and there are already lots of plans in place for a wonderful array of fun and exciting competitions. Our new activity packs are proving to be extremely popular and these will continue throughout the months."

Ideas so far include the return of the very popular scarecrow competition to the streets of Mirfield, as well as competitions themed on kindness, togetherness and friendship.

A schedule of competitions are planned to run for a full 12 months, meaning other themes could be included such as Halloween and Christmas.

Jonathan added: "For now, I would like to thank you all for your continued support for the show and look forward to welcoming everybody back onto the showground in 2022.

"If you are a local organisation, charity or business and have already booked to come to the show, please bear with us and we will be in touch as soon as we can.

"Please stay safe."
