Batley food bank stocking up for Christmas as demand soars

Batley food bank is stocking up for the Christmas period as is sees more people and families seeking help.

The food bank was already running on full steam before the arrival of Covid, and in recent months has had to deal with an influx of new people needing support because of job losses, reduction in pay and benefit delays.

In recent weeks, referrals have increased by 33 per cent

Whilst dealing with greater demand, volunteers have had to make numerous changes, including home delivery and making sure the food bank is Covid-safe.

Batley Food Bank has become a vital life-line for some people affected economically by the pandemic, as it was and still is for those locked into poverty and unable to afford the basic essentials.

Batley Food Bank Co-ordinator, Anna Russell, said:This Christmas will bring its challenges for many people, as they struggle with their living costs and reduced income.

But with support from the local community and businesses, through donations and their time, the food bank can try bring some comfort to those in most need.

“Demand for our services at the food bank has never been as high. We can’t stock the shelves fast enough to keep up with the amount of service users that are coming through the door.," she said.

“We know demand will be even higher in the build up to Christmas as more and more people are affected economically by Covid.

“Our team of volunteers are amazing and they have worked tirelessly through the pandemic to make sure those who need a bit of extra support can get it.

“I’ve no doubt that they’ll step up to the challenge to make sure no one in Batley and the surrounding area goes hungry this Christmas.”
