The firm has won a building contract to bring together all the services at the hospital into its existing Ridings building and service centre.

Kier said the project would provide a new main entrance as a central focal point for patients, visitors and staff at the Halifax Road hospital.

At Mid Yorkshire, a reorganisation of services is planned to centralise emergency care at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

Dewsbury will have an urgent care centre treating minor ailments as critically-ill and injured patients are transferred to Pinderfields.

Dewsbury will also lose its consultant-led maternity unit as complex births are carried out at Pinderfields.

Kier said it would carry out the project in two phases, starting with relocating services into the Ridings building and service centre later this year. The new entrance is part of phase two.

The scheme is expected to be completed by summer 2018.

Robbie Blackhurst, Kier framework manager, said: “We are pleased to have been chosen to deliver this exciting re-configuration of Dewsbury and District Hospital, which will help to provide a more streamlined service for patients.”

Kier is one of six companies appointed by the Department of Health to carry out building projects as part of an NHS procurement scheme.

Kevin Oxley, Mid Yorkshire’s responsible for capital projects, said: “Kier have a long and distinguished track record in both hospital redevelopment and new builds.

“We look forward to them bringing their experience and expertise to this important project.”

The company has also won a £25m contract to upgrade three hospitals in Boston, Grantham and Lincoln for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
