Dewsbury school ‘incredibly proud’ as superstar golfer triumphs at Ryder Cup course and rugby team crowned Yorkshire Cup champions
A Dewsbury school is celebrating double sporting success with a talented young golfer triumphing at an international event in Rome and its girls’ rugby league team being crowned Yorkshire Cup champions.
The Year 11 girls’ rugby league side at St John Fisher Catholic Voluntary Academy claimed the regional cup after a dramatic final victory over Liberty Academy from Hull.

In a thrilling contest the team held their nerve to secure a 24–22 win, showcasing outstanding skill, resilience, and teamwork, with the victory capping off what has already been an incredible season for girls’ rugby at the school with both the Year 10 and Year 11 teams having reached the Yorkshire and National Finals.
Head of Year 11, Ms Thompstone, said: “We are incredibly proud of our girls’ rugby league teams for their outstanding achievement in reaching both the Yorkshire and National Finals this season.
“Their commitment, teamwork, and determination have been exceptional, and they continue to set a brilliant example for younger students coming through the sport.
“We also want to recognise the vital role played by our local rugby league clubs, whose coaching, encouragement, and development pathways have been instrumental in growing girls’ rugby league across the area.
“Their support has helped our students thrive, and together we’re creating fantastic opportunities for girls to succeed in the sport.”
With the Yorkshire Cup title now secured, attention turns to the National Finals in April, where the team will look to continue their remarkable journey on the national stage.

The school is also celebrating Year 7 pupil Tilly who triumphed on the international stage after claiming gold at a prestigious golf tournament in Rome.
The youngster competed in an elite event organised by US Kids Golf, the world’s largest junior golf organisation, at the renowned Marco Simone Golf Course, host venue for the 2023 Ryder Cup, and brought together some of the most promising young golfers from across the globe.
Tilly delivered an outstanding performance across the two-day tournament, taking the lead on day one before holding her position to secure victory, finishing an incredible 13 shots - on a challenging championship course - ahead of her nearest competitor.
Head of PE at the school, Mr Graham, said: “We are incredibly proud of Tilly and her outstanding golfing success. Her dedication, resilience and passion for the sport shine through in everything she does.

“Tilly is a fantastic role model for our students, and her achievements highlight what can be accomplished through hard work and commitment.
“We can’t wait to see what she goes on to achieve next.”
Tilly’s parents spoke of their pride in their daughter’s achievements, describing her as “incredibly dedicated and hardworking” and saying the family are “so proud of everything she has accomplished so far.”
Looking ahead, Tilly is now preparing for the World Championships in July, which will take place in Palm Springs, USA.
In another remarkable milestone, she has also been named the first ever female ambassador for The Faldo Series.
