Multi-million pound Dewsbury bus station gets green light

West Yorkshire Combined Authority has revealed transport improvements that will benefit residents and businesses in Dewsbury’s surrounding communities, providing a better access to an affordable, cleaner and attractive transport network.

The new bus station is part of a £317 million investment from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund, set to create more than 1,100 new jobs, and add £1 billion to the West Yorkshire economy.

Dewsbury East councillor, Eric Firth said: “The current bus station is 40 years old and not fit for purpose.

“This new bus station will better link up Dewsbury to nearby cities including Leeds, and provide a facelift to the nearby Westgate area too.”

The project, which is set for completion by 2023, was pushed through quickly due the UK being on Covid-19 lockdown compared to other project, said Mr Firth.

“The bus station’s planning stage has been a quick one due to the country being on lockdown because of coronavirus.

“There’s a lot of work to do, but it’s exciting times for the town.”

The Programme is made up of 22 packages schemes across North, and West Yorkshire.
