Wendy Clough is the community champion for Morrisons in Heckmondwike, tasked with helping local good causes with support and donations.

And in aid of Morrisons’ charity partner CLIC Sargent, who support young people with cancer, she has been singing over the tannoy system at Morrisons, and took part in an ice bucket challenge.

Wendy said: “Due to the coronavirus outbreak, CLIC Sargent has seen a 60 per cent drop in income with fundraising events cancelled or on hold.

“This means a devastating loss of £8 million this year and so a big gap in income needed to pay for vital services which support the NHS, such as Homes from Home and social worker teams normally based in hospitals.

“So back in June CLIC Sargent asked stores to come up with dares to raise money.

“One of my friends at work came up with a brilliant dare for me which was to sing a song at the checkouts over the tannoy system.

“On June 19, I did this dare. I was so, so nervous as this is something that I would never do as I can not sing to save my life.

“I raised a total of £1,004 with donations from friends, family, colleagues and customers.

“The Morrisons Foundation has matched my fundraising, to which I am absolutely thrilled with, bringing my total of £2,008.

“The following week, on the Thursday, which had been the hottest day of the year so far, I did an Ice Bucket Challenge.

“Myself and a few of my colleagues volunteered ourselves to get completely drenched in ice and water.

“It was an awesome and fun afternoon and we raised a massive £390,” she added.

“We have set up a Just Giving fundraising page called Heckmondwike 42 Big Virtual Collection to try and raise funds virtually.”
